There are many components and moving parts within the process of separation regardless of whether the partners have been married or resided together as common-law spouses. Family law is complex and each situation has its own unique set of facts/circumstances.
At Progressive Legal Solutions (PLS) we practice exclusively in the area of family law. We specialize in common-law separation, divorce or any other issues of family law arising out of separation. PLS constantly deals with the issues identified below but not limited to only them.

This means that we are dedicated to develop a reasonable position in the separation on your behalf. It will allow you to avoid unnecessary costs.
To ensure cost-effective results in the context of a family law separation (whether you are in court or at the stage of negotiation), it is important to set realistic goals. It is also important to understand to achieve them and what are the methods of achieving them. Finally, you need to know what is the potential cost involved in the process. In other words, you need a roadmap of the process.
Our Process
- Whether you need a family lawyer or want a general understanding of the process, you can schedule an initial consultation. During this meeting, we will discuss all the issues you are facing. We will also talk about potential solutions, and the next steps you will need to take. The lawyer will help you understand the nuances within the context of your case. It may include a discussion whether you need a lawyer at all for your family law matter.
- After you have made a decision to retain PLS, you will have a longer interview with the family lawyer. The lawyer will review your documents, draft materials or pleadings. We strive to not waste our clients' time. We will try to finalize the required documents within one appointment. Even if the lawyer does not have all of the required documents as advised in our pre-appointment/welcome email, it is not a problem. The lawyer will finalize the materials once he receives the missing pieces from you.
- Depending on whether you are in litigation or negotiation stage, there will be a deadline for a response from the other party. If your lawyer does not receive a response or if it is not satisfactory, you will provide instructions as to the next steps. You will discuss your options and receive a legal advice from your lawyer before providing instructions. This process will ensure your family law matter is moving forward and the opposing party is not stalling the progress.
- Prior to each step within the litigation or negotiation, you will discuss the matter with the lawyer. The circumstances may change depending on many factors. They include: information received from the opposing party, new personal circumstances, etc. This process will allow you to pivot in the right direction and always maintain a reasonable position. It will maximize the cost efficiency.
